Preface

Preface

The North and the South said they were fighting for freedom and in Battle Cry of Freedom, the central theme is the meaning of slavery and freedom and how it evolved into new patterns during the war.

Americans lived through trying times and the Civil War had affected society so deeply, its effects can be felt today as history magazines and books chronicle the war and some die-hard fanatics reenact battles.

This book uses a narrative approach and employs a variety of resources, primary source documents (maps, quotes, diaries), a bibliography to direct the reader to further reading if need be.

I don't particularly understand why the author would feel the need to justify the length of the book in the Editor's Intro (900 pages... I can just imagine all the words I'm going to have to cram into my head) since the war is complex and has facets of it that require these many pages to explain.

Key Terms:
There are none, as of yet, since this is just the preface.

Questions Before I Start:

  • In what ways were the North and the South at fault for causing the war?
  • What events lengthened/shortened the war?
  • How did public opinion of slavery and freedom change in both the North and the South?
